POLL: Do people who have communicable illnesses have an obligation to avoid public areas

POLL: Do people who have communicable illnesses have an obligation to avoid public areas?
I'm sitting in the Delta Sky Club in Memphis awaiting a delayed flight connection. On the opposite side of a room is sitting a guy who clearly has some kind of respiratory illness. I don't know if it's communicable or not, but I don't appreciate him sharing his germs by coughing into the open air every few minutes. Which brings me to my question. If you are sick, do you have a responsibility to avoid public areas (and public transit, such as airplanes, trains, buses, etc), or is it your right to use them anyway and instead is it the responsibility of other travelers to protect themselves from your germs? What say all of you?

I think they have the right to spread their germs, be it responsible or not. If you're worried about getting sick in a public place, then wear one of those hospital masks.....seriously, I had to when "I" was sick so I didn't get other's germs....it was for MY sake, not theirs....but my illness was not communicable. so I guess it would all depend on your view of things....either you think it's rude and irresponsible for people to cough in public or you don't. In any case, have a hand disinfectant along with you at all times so you can use it when opening public doors or touch things that might be "infected." Just a precaution!!!! Good luck to you!!!
2 :
Unfortunately, sick people have no legal or moral obligation to avoid public places. But you cannot armchair diagnose those you see. I have respiratory allergies, for example, that cause itching in my throat. I often cough but there's no infection communicable or otherwise. My point is, you can't always tell if what you see and hear is communicable or not. But be glad he's on the OTHER side of the room. Those who make no effort to control or cover a cough are rude and thoughtless but you can avoid potential problems by keeping your distance. On the other hand, there are times when sick people HAVE to travel -- it just can't be avoided. The man you were looking at may be on a business trip that he simply couldn't reschedule much as he may have wanted to. You could be in his position some day, you know. As for other forms of public transportation, many people are too poor to stay home when sick. They just can't afford to miss work. They may not have benefits like sick days and paid-time-off, the way that I do or that you may have. Two or three missed days at work may mean the difference between food on the table and going hungry, or a roof over the family's head and eviction. You just never know. So, try to give people the benefit of a doubt and take steps to protect yourself.

Do you think this is Racist

Do you think this is Racist?
The report I filed. My name is Jane Jones and I feel like I have been racialy mistreated going through security at the Memphis International Airport. My flight was with American Airlines at 6:15. As I was going throgh security yesterday 2/23/2011 around 5:40 I handed my id and tickets to the security woman at the check point. I had already taken off my shoes and my 3 children shoes. My mother was with me and she was helping me carry our shoes and jackets. The lady asked my mom rudely to step behind the line since she was not traveling. I understand it's a safety procedure so I didn't get upset. Still seeing that i'm struggling trying to gather our items from my mom she just stood there. My mom asked "is there a basket she can sit their stuff in?" The lady just looked so I grabbed a container to place our stuff in.. To make a long story short the security woman pretened there was a problem with my tickets and ask one of the workers to go check on it.. He retured in less than a minute and and said that the AA associate said the tickets were fine (she just printed them out) As my children and I stood to the side I watched as she check three white people tickets and id. She barely glanced at their id's and tickets. Then she told me that I could go through. My mom asked what was the problem why was it taking so long and I told my mom "look at the color of my skin". The security woman just gave me a look like oh well she didn't once say no it's not that and explain the problem. I never experienced anything like this in my life. My children are 5, 3, and 1 years old so imagine how hard it was getting all of them through the airport alone. When I got on the plane a few tears rolled down my face because I know that lady treated me this way because I was black and I guess she didn't want the other white people to have to wait on my 3 kids and I to go through checkpoint.

Are you sure this happened because of your skin? Or are you just playing the race card? If it was because of your skin then it's quite racist, but I doubt that it was.
2 :
Yes, very racist. Something needs to be done about it.
3 :
You had tickets she didn't recognize. It's her job to check these things. How is that racist? I mean, if the white passengers had the same kind of tickets that she wasn't sure of and she let them pass, then that would be discrimination. The problem: Your tickets looked questionable, not your skin. I don't get it. I mean it's like you're so self conscious about being treated differently, that you can't even think logically. I feel sorry for you. You need help if you want to have a less stressful life.
4 :
I agree with you... and if it wasn't based on race, it was based on something and you were treated rudely and unfairly. Who knows the reason, since it wasn't confirmed.... but it seems awfully fishy that you were the only one she felt the need to check up on. Perhaps you wouldn't have come to this conclusion had she treated you with courtesy in the first place. Good luck, hope it all works out. Don't let the ignorant people out there get you down, there time in power is ending.
5 :
I am an olive skinned - South Asian - Punjabi guy myself, and I think your being too soft/ over sensitive about the situation. Even I live in the UK and when I started a white majority school with all white kids - even though I am not as dark as Black people (just a little tanned) I still felt out of place sometimes. This got to the extent that even when I thought a kid, or a teacher, or a worker came across as abrupt - I automatically assumed in my mind that it was racism - anyway long story short a lot of the people I met the second time round seem to be fine - so it was never racism at all it was all in my head. A similar case - might have happened with you - you might have caught that woman on an off day where she was being like that with anyone - she may have reacted similar to a white, or any other race passing through the airport. I am just saying - I think Black people shouldn't be so quick to pull out the race card these days - general racism against Blacks hasn't been around for a long time in the US or the UK - they are respected because of Music and other various contributions. If anything I think us Olive/ Brown complexioned people suffer the most racism these days due to 9/11 and various other predicaments hapenning in South Asia and the Middle East - and you never hear us pulling out the race card.

What class do I need on a plane

What class do I need on a plane?
This will be my first time to fly round trip from Memphis to Washington, DC... I don't want any special 1st class trip, I just want a general plane trip there and back. I have seen the different types of coach classes. FIRST question... What's the difference? and SECOND what type of flight should I take if I just want a regular flight there, (nothing special)?
Air Travel - 8 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Unless you specify that you want special arrangements, such as a certain type of flight or 1st class, you should get the typical coach flight. I wasn't aware that there are different sections in coach or that there are different types of flights. You should probably call the airline and ask them for advice.
2 :
Most airline the seats are all economy class 1st class costs a fortune and since yours is a short journey that will be fine.
3 :
fly coach. difference is leg room and price. in response to your second question, you're overthinking it, just book a flight. there's no special distinction between flights other than direct vs. multiple stops. you obviously prefer direct flights but often cannot control it.
4 :
Ask for regular economy fare.
5 :
There are First Class, Business Class and Economy Class. The differences are seats, ammenities, food and beverages. And of course, first class and business class tickets are more expensive. If you want the regular flight, nothing special, just take the economy class. You might be able to check out the features of each class on the airlines website, too. =)
6 :
You want a regular flight, get a coach ticket, it's a regular seat. Decide if you want a window seat or an aisle seat.
7 :
First class on a flight of this distance is really not worth the money. You'll get a few extra treats, such as a private check in line, access to the lounge (some airlines), a slightly better meal and a bigger seat. But you are only flying a < 2 hour flight so most of that is going to be wasted. Economy (coach) class is 95% of a plane for a flight of this distance. You can buy a 'full fare economy ticket' which gives you basically the right to change your flight plans to a different flight, get a refund if you don't go, etc. But for this you'll probably pay as much as for a first class fare (seriously!) You should look at getting a restricted economy ticket. They come in all varieties, those that require 21 day advance purchase, 14 day, or 7 day advance purchases. Then there are those that require you to stay over a Saturday night in a hotel (i.e. designed for tourists, not wealthy business travellers). I'd start with yahoo. http://travel.yahoo.com and search for fares. When searching, use the airport code 'WAS' which will search for the cheapest fare to all three Washington airport (IAD Dulles, DCA Reagan National, and BWI Baltimore). DCA is the closest to the city (i.e. on the subway) but it is often cheaper to go to BWI or IAD. I wouldn't think a fare like this would be more than $200-$300.
8 :
I don't think anyone has really answered your question, I believe you're asking what's the difference between all the different fare classes (y,b,k,h etc.). First of all, they are all the same as far as the type of seat you get and the cabin class that you are flying. The main differences are the types of restrictions based on the fare you pay and fare class you are buying. A full-fare no restrictions ticket (y, I believe) will allow you to change dates with no penalty, other fare classes may impose a fee if you want to change your flight after you've booked, some (heavily discounted) will have severe restrictions and maybe non-eligibility for frequent flyer miles and on and on. It all can be very confusing. If you know when you are going to fly without the possibility of changing your dates, buy the least expensive ticket you can get, if you are not sure about the restrictions, call the airline and ask what they are. It's very possible that the person sitting next to you on a flight to have paid hundreds of dollars more or less for the exact product you get, sometimes two or three times more, in general, just buy the cheapest fare you can get, it's all the same once you're on the plane, and don't miss or change your flights. A few airlines do have premium economy or coach seats where you will get a little more legroom, but that's basically a different cabin class altoghether. Good luck.

Yes, they are and some up to one hour or slightly more.. Most of these would depend on delays coming in from outside the U.S. and people catching connections.

seating arrangements for my trip

seating arrangements for my trip?
I'm leaving on a round trip from Memphis to Washington, DC. I will land in Atlanta where I have to catch my connecting flight.. My ticket is ordered online, so do I need to make ALL my seating arrangements at Memphis before I leave? for both my flights, including my connecting plane?

Yes Ofcourse it will convenience for you during travelling
2 :
hi yes its convenient and will allow you if you know the place to sit in a good seat pick aether a window seat or usually about row g is right by a door so you will have a lot of space
3 :
Most don't preassign seats unless you call and specifically ask for a certian seat. Most seats are assigned when you check in. The earlier you check in the better the seat assignment. Keep in mind that the 'good' seats-exit rows, bulkhead, and seats near the front-are usually blocked out for frequent fliers. This doesn't mean you can't get one of these seats, just that they're more likely to go to a passenger who flies that airline regularly.
4 :
You don't NEED to make all of your seating arrangements, but I would highly recommend you do so. You should be able to go to the airline's website and choose your seats. Before you do, though, check out http://www.seatguru.com/ - it will tell you the best and worst seats on every airplane. You should be able to tell what type of plane you are flying on by going to the airline website and checking out your flight.
5 :
Heck why wait? Call the airline you are flying on and ask the representative to assign your seats in advance so that it's even less stress on the day you travel.

Where do I clear U.S. Customs on return from MoBay

Where do I clear U.S. Customs on return from MoBay?
I'm getting conflicting info on where I clear Customs on my return flight from Montego Bay to Memphis. Is there U.S.Customs clearance in Sangster International, or will I clear in Memphis? Please, I'd like to hear from people who've made the trip recently, and really know. Thanks, but the first answer is precisely what I want to avoid. Please, if you've flown out of MoBay to the US recently, let me know where you cleared.

1 :
I doubt very much that they have a US customs in Jamaica. That will be in Memphis since that is where you are getting off.
2 :
You will clear US customs once you get off the plane in the US. They are located in the international terminal. If your flight has another leg you will have to recheck your luggage at the proper terminal once you clear customs. *Be prepared to wait in line for 5 minutes- over an hour since they don't always have a ton of staff on duty.
3 :
I am also going to make this journey in a couple months from MoBay to Memphis. Everything I have read states that you will go through customs when you get into the states. I am changing planes in Miami and that is where we will clear customs
4 :
You will clear U.S. Customs at your first point of entry into the USA. There is no U.S. Customs clearance in Jamaica.
5 :
There is customs at two points, 1. Jamaican Customs, when leaving Montego Bay. This is usually just procedural, with no real searches unless they suspect you are carrying drugs. You might also face 'random' searches prior to boarding the airplane. 2. U.S. Customs at the first point of entry into the U.S.A., for a memphis flight, this is usually miami, fort lauderdale or atlanta.

if you worked for fedex you use to be able to but not anymore you can thank Auburn Calloway for taking away that benefit he tried to hijack a DC 10 and his plan to have it crash into the Memphis hub since that time only the crew of that airplane can fly on Fedex aircraft
2 :
No. No passengers allowed on FedEx.
3 :
You may be able to...If you are an airline pilot
4 :
the local fedex stations employees in So Cal were asking the same question to the FedEx president of the western United States and his answer was no. He stated that the reason was because of 9/11.

I prepared a nice response for you after reading your last question, but I was unable to post it because your question was deleted. To know about the contributions of people of African descent to Western civilization, you should read books by Martin Bernal, W.E.B. Du Bois, J.A. Rogers, Carter G. Woodson, Martin Delaney, George G.M. James, Chancellor Williams, John G. Jackson, John Henrik Clarke, Yosef Ben Jochanon, Cheik Anta Diop, Ivan Van Sertima, Tim Wise, who is unfortunately white like you (no offense to non-racist white people), Asa Hilliard, Maulana Karenga, Wade Nobles, Frances Welsing, Molefi Asante and so much more. Knowledge truly is power.

I am being dead serious. Those who told you that you were crazy, are not Elvis fans. They don't understand the way we feel about Elvis. Never had never will. There's a saying within the Elvis world. "If your an Elvis fan, no explanation is necessary, if your not an Elvis fan, no explanation is possible." If you're an Elvis fan, Graceland is a must. AND, if your an Elvis fan, you won't go to Graceland just once. I was there for the 25th and it was the best time. I made a point to be there for the 25th. I think that was my 3rd time there. I've been to Graceland 7 or 8 times already and I'm only 25. I already have my plans for the 30th and I cannot wait. I have had my plans for a year already. Graceland is expecting the 30th to be the biggest Elvis Week, biggest crowd EVER, since Graceland opened. When I made my reservations, I was telling the guy at the hotel about the 30th and he told me that it was probably not the best time to go. I replied with "Actually, it's the best time to go." There is a lot planned for Elvis Weeks in general, but you add a major anninversary to that and it's next to impossible to do everything offered. You (if you make it), me and every other Elvis fan is going to have the time of our lives at the 30th!!!
4 :
No... I didn't like Elvis when he was alive and so I don't really care anything about him or his trinkets now.

It is important to know time zones. Eastern time zone: New York, Washington, Boston Central time zone: Memphis, Dallas Pacific time zone: Los Angeles, Portland Hawaiian time zone: Honolulu Examples: If it is 12 noon in NY, it is 11 am in Memphis, 9 am in LA and 7 am in Honolulu with Standard time. Add hours travelling east and subtract them going west. 1.) Departure- Houston,1:30 pm Arrival- Honolulu, 7:08 am Flight Time ? Do you mean 7.08 pm? This makes no sense. 2.) If you're really concerned about costs, forget about trips outside the USA. Try the National Parks system. Big cities represent the highest costs for doing anything - eating, staying in a hotel, seeing entertainment.
3 :
If you are going out of the US, you will need a passport. Also, international travel is not known for being "not alot of money", even to inexpensive destinations, because of the airfare. For low-cost vacations, consider national parks and state parks. The TN state park system has many parks with cabin rentals and lots of recreational opportunities. Also, consider stay-cations. You stay at home and take day trips. Since you are in Martin, you could take a day trip to Memphis, one to Reelfoot Lake, one to Tunica, one on the Natchez Trace, and one to Nashville.
4 :
Cheapest would probably be to Canada. I would suggest Toronto or Montreal. If you are looking for a "foreign flavor" then definately Montreal. People there like to pretend that nobody understands English! These days you will probably need a Passport for Canada.

I am flying from Memphis to Geneva with a connection in Amsterdam. I have flown many times and I am not worried. I don't want to be treated like a baby and I want to be able to carry my own documents, make my connection by myself. Is that possible?....how will i be treated?

How old are you? Even if your old enough not to a mandatory chaperone, your parents can still make you have one. And how will you be treated will most likely depend on your age. If your 14, then you should expect to be treated like a 14 yr old by adults.
2 :
It depends on your age and the airline you are flying on. Perhapes your parents can tell them that this isn't your first time flying and they will let you have more responsibility
3 :
DARN you failed to state how you are! sometimes airlines will not let minors make connections the flight has to be direct or nonstop and each airline has different rules some airlines say you can be consider an adult at 12 (southwest for example) other airlines say 14, and 15 but since you didn't say what airline nor how you are old its hard to give you an answer some times you will need a parent or guardian to go with the gate and then the same on the other end then its will be up to the country you flying some times they wont let in minors unless they have notarized notes from BOTH parents permission and proof that you are not a runway but since you didnt say what airline.........

Can I leave the airport on long layovers between international flights

Can I leave the airport on long layovers between international flights?
Im flying from Memphis to Amsterdam to Vienna and ive got a 6 hour wait in amsterdam. Can i leave the airport and explore between flights? My friend said I have to stay in something called a transit lounge. Is this true? Can I not leave?

As long as you have a ticket (boarding pass) that has the Ams/Ven portion on it clearly stating the time and your flights aren't a thru flight you should have no problem leaving. The only way I could see you running into trouble is customs. Sometimes customs can be a little hard to get through and even though you won't be in Ams for long you'll still have to go through customs and that can take up all your time. The transit lounge is there for persons like yourself who have a longer period of time between flights. They are usually very nice and help pass the time faster. Best advice talk to the gate agent when you get off the plane and see what they think they'll know best as they deal with these situations on a daily basis. You're going to love Ven by the way it's a beautiful city.
2 :
6 hours is not a long time for international flights. My best recommendation is to find a seat and get comfortable. Those transit lounges are for the top level of frequent flier programs and those that purchase access to them, ie it costs money like $60 per person for a day.
3 :
As long as you don't require a visa, you're fine to leave the airport. If you're an American you don't need a visa, but will have to clear immigration or passport control. I've been through Schipol Airport a few times and there's a train that takes you right from the airport to the Central Train station not far many tourist sights and other interesting places. It only takes 15-20 minutes each way. You don't have a lot of time, but Amsterdam is one place that's very fast and easy to get into the city from the airport and you should have more than enough time to explore parts of the city.

This is what we did........ On a regular scheduled flight it is better to book far in advance because it tends to be cheaper. Now..a charter flight is different. If you can book 3 or 4 days before the flight leaves and if there are seats left they go for cheap, cheap, cheap. Where ever you get the cheap flight for then look for accommodation. We booked on a Tuesday and left on Saturday from Calgary to Cancun for $353 and then went on www.vrbo.com and found a great condo for $500 per week.(www.casa-schwartz.com). We took the bus from Cancun airport for $8 each to Playa del Carmen where the condo is. Total cost for 2 for 2 weeks, air and accommodation was $1722 and didn't have the bore of an all inclusive. We were very surprised how many people hotel and condo it and will never go All inclusive again cause we had way more fun. Anyways from Memphis there should be tons of flights out of there and you would have the world at your picking.

How to get a pilot's license

How to get a pilot's license?
I live in Memphis Tn. I having been thinking about getting a commercial airline pilot's license but I am not exactly sure how to start. I am not joing the air force so please do not consider me joining the military. I also have a few questions! Can I just go to college such as Middle Tennessee State University to major in aviation (professional pilot) and become a pilot that way, or will I have to go to a flight school?
Aircraft - 4 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
No major airline requires to get an aviation degree - They just require "any" 4 years degree - Too bad you will not go the military way - That gives you 75% chance to be hired by majors - As civilian, chances to be hired by majors are slim - And flight training costs are staggering -
2 :
It really isn't to difficult to obtain your private pilot license (PPL). Hear are the steps that you will have to take to get your license without going into the military... 1. Go to your local airport or call and schedule a discovery flight (first lesson you get where instructor will get you familiar with the airplane. 2. About 6-16 lessons or flight hours in you will do something called a solo. Which is when you will fly the plane for the first time but you will stay close to the airport "the pattern" 3. About 25-35 hours through you will do a solo cross country (which is not acually to another country) where you will simply fly by yourself to another airport and back. 4. Take a written test. 5. Take a oral test with a different flight instructor will ask you a series of questions while in the plane with you. 6. Take your checkride which you go up with the person that gave you your oral test and show them various menuvours. 7. YOU GET YOUR LICENSE the time from your discovery flight to getting your license will end up costing around 5000-6000$ realistically and the process will take about a year or 2. You have to have 40 hours to get your license but most get it in 50-60. And you will have to look at the college, all are different but you don't have to go to a flight school. For instance, I go to western michigan and they have a amazing flight program but I didn't have anything to do with it because its really expensive so I became an instructor at a local airport to build up my hours. All you have to do is have 250 hours of flight time for your commercial and a few little things. If you have any questions feel free to email me at tylerkeeter@yahoo.com
3 :
Get a 4-year degree in whatever interests you. Start taking flight lessons at a local flight school and work your way up from PPL to ATR. You'll have about $90,000 in costs plus whatever college costs. Your competition for the few seats available will be ex-military whose training and experience will far exceed yours. Good luck with the HR at the airlines.
4 :
You can either got to a college for both an aviation degree and flight school (this is generally the most expensive way) or you can attend any college and while going to school and or summers get your Pilot Certifications (this is the most economical way). In the end, all the airlines care about are that you have the Pilot Certification needed for the job, you are professional and a safe pilot - no degree needed for the commuter airlines (such as SkyWest, American Eagle) but you will definitely want a degree for the Major Airlines (such as American, United, SouthWest). When picking out a flight school - professionalism, maintenance and the quality of the instructor staff really matter. Do just go with the cheapest school - really pick an academy that will give you quality instruction. I suggest part 141 flight school (these are FAA approved) part 61 can be anything from a freelance operation to a professional outfit -but why find out if they are professional the hard way - stick to the ones approved by the FAA and go with 141.

You can call the airlines directly, but being that you are on a PC, there are probably a lot of websites that you can also search and book via the web. when i need to fly, i usually go onto Travelocity or Expedia to see what airlines fly to that area and what the general costs are. This will give you a good overview. Keep in mind that there are a lot of NEW FEES that didn't exist before. Therefore pack light and if you need to read up on any additional costs, simply log onto the airline site to read more about what is restricted and what is not. General information: - stick with a national airlines - delta, american, etc should all be fine. keep in mind that depending on where their 'hub" is (main offices) is when you might need to take connecting flights, so this should be a factor also - try to keep the connections to a bare minimum. - clear plastic quart sized toiletries. Everything has to fit in this bag. if not, check your luggage (remember, there are costs associated with this now). - times of travel, this will help you narrow down your airline choices also. i'm assuming that either you will drive there or your friend will pick you up - try to estimate the time of when you should arrive. generally the later the flight (or 1st flight) can be cheaper than others, but you will be able to compare if you go on the sites i listed above. relax, the most difficult part is the take-off due to all the noise -- just lay back and then take in the sights, it's pretty cool. if you are old enough to have ONE beer -- not more -- before the flight, this might help also in just calming your nerves (remember, drink too much and ANY airlines can kick you off the plane). good luck
2 :
I always check the website of the airport I'm departing from to see which airlines have terminals there. Next I go to the web site of particular airlines and plug in the dates of my flight. It will then calculate the cost of a tkt. Also you can see the times of each flight and how many stops/layover times and make your decision based on that information. I haven't found sites like Expedia,Orbit, etc to be much cheaper than booking directly with the airline. To actually book the flight you will need a debit or credit card. Only takes a short few minutes to book the actual flight. Takes me longer to pick a flight and a seat than to purchase the tkt.
3 :
If you will tell us where you will be flying from, I can give you more help. Otherwise, you might want to go to a travel agent for this first flight. They may charge a small booking fee, but it would be well worth it to get good advice. Booking online can be tricky if you don't know much about flying.

NO, as long as you stay in the secured area....if you leave the airport, or go through the gate exit area, where you would go to exit the airport, you will have to go back through. You will, however, have to show your boarding pass again, and depending on the security level, may have to show ID.
2 :
You only need to go through security again if you leave the "secure area". Simply to change planes, you stay in the secure area and don't have to go through security again -- just go to the gate for the second flight.
3 :
I've never been through Memphis, but according to the Memphis Airport website, you do not need to clear security again as long as you stay airside and use the concourse connecting walkways if you need to change concourses: http://www.mscaa.com/?q=passenger/connections

Delta and American both have a published fare of $392 + taxes and fees, and this fare requires 21 days advanced purchase. You can get the same Fare on United, but it requires a Sunday night stay. After 21 days out, the fare jumps to $502 + taxes and fees. As with all discount fares, there are capacity controlled and subject to availability.

Go to kayak.com and put in the dates and it will give you the prices for each airline.

Is it domestic or international

Is it domestic or international?
The flight is in two parts. It goes from Memphis to Atlanta, then Atlanta to Tokyo. Should it be treated as domestic in terms of how early I need to get to the Memphis airport? Well, despite trying to get there 2 hours early, after getting lost several times, we got there 1 hour before departure and got checked in just fine. The line wasn't too bad. This was with Delta and around 6 AM.

It's considered Intercontinental.
2 :
It'll be international -- they'll check you through to your final destination in Memphis.
3 :
Hi,, i know it sounds confusing but I think it will be considered a International flight,, since you are going overseas.. even if you are in America....... hope this helps... good luck
4 :
I flew NorthWest Airlines from Japan to Detroit and then from Detroit to Dallas. In Detroit, I had to get all of my bags from the international flight and re-check them in the domestic area. With security these days, you might have to re-check your bags in Atlanta. Especially since you might have to switch terminals. Contact the airline you are using and ask them for advice.
5 :
I just read the other answers, but I'm almost positive that because you have a stop in a domestic city prior to international travel, that you should treat the first segment of your flight as domestic (i.e., you don't need to get to the airport 3 hours in advance). Your luggage can/will be checked through to your international destination and you will go through customs once you get to Tokyo. I've flown from LAX to many international places and always seem to get stuck stopping in Newark, NJ. You will leave out of a domestic terminal (unless you are on an international carrier like Air Lingus) and then possibly have to switch to an international terminal in Atlanta, if they have one. Bottom line, get there 1 1/2 to 2 hours early. :)
6 :
The last poster is correct. The first segment is domestic, and the second one is international. Your checked luggage shoud be checked through to your final destination upon departure from Memphis. That security line in Memphis moves slllooooowwww, so give yourself a little extra time. When you arrive in Atlanta, just go to your next gate. Your baggage will be handled for you, and you will clear customs upon arrival into Tokyo. That's a really long flight, I do it often, bring lots of books. Your return is the exact opposite. When you depart Tokyo, your luggage will have to be claimed in Atlanta, then you proceed through customs there. After that, you have to re-check your bags, and make your connecting flight home to Memphis. So when you depart Tokyo, that's when you will have to be there quite early for your international departure.
7 :
No treat it as international...your first boarding point will probably want to check your passport etc...to make sure that you are ok for the next leg...at least if it's the same airline....because they will be heavily fined by Japan if you are inadmissable etc.

from where are pilots getting their flight route for each specific flight, and how do they get it

from where are pilots getting their flight route for each specific flight, and how do they get it?
I'm asking because I flew from Amsterdam to Memphis with Northwest last week. But how does the pilot actually get his flight plan (which changes all the time due to the jet-streams)?! to the 3rd answerer: what do you mean by "teletype"? Is it a method where the plan is sent via satellites directly to the FMC? and: let's then imagine the ground agent gets the flight plan faxed. This would be a paper. So, the pilots would have to enter the route manually in the FMC (on a 4000 nm route, there could be a lot of waypoints, maybe more than 100). This would be very long, right? (Therefore I always thought that the pilot just gets something like a USB-Stick, which he puts in the FMC and then can upload the flight plan directly, without taping manually then..)?!
Aircraft - 7 Answers

1 :
The airline has a Dispatch Department that gathers all the pertinent flight data and generates a specific flight plan for each flight. This is then transmitted to the flight crew via computers that are located at each airport.
2 :
In theory a pilot is responsible for the whole flight and does flight planning by using charts and maps. We consider using jet ways, IFR routes ( both are like highways in the sky) we can choose to fly direct with out using an airway, we take into account weather, we want the wind moving our direction to give us more speed, the wind can be different at different altitudes, and then there is some direction from atc. Given all this, commercial airline pilots have flight planners that do it for them.
3 :
It is teletyped or faxed from the Dispatcher, and picked up at Operations or from the departure gate agent. The captain may deviate from the flight plan, and nearly always does; if it is by more than a certain amount (e.g. 50 miles) he is to coordinate with the dispatcher.
4 :
The filed route is printed on the release. You'll get the release from some old printer with a big ol' box of paper running through it. (the teletype; it's how instant messages were sent prior to the internet. I can't believe that I'm so old that I have to explain what a teletype is!) The FMC database (if the aircraft is equipped with an FMC) will have all of the navaids, airways, intersections, etc already in the box. For example, if I were to fly from San Diego to Honolulu and was filed on the southernmost track, all I'd have to do after entering the departure and route to the first fix would be to type in the name of the airway or track (R578 in this case. All of this will be entred on the Route page, by the way). All 9 fixes on the track will then be displayed on the legs page of the FMC. North Atlantic tracks are flexible and must be charted. There'll be a fix for every 10 degrees of longitude or so. The dispatcher will consult the track messages prior to filing the flight plan and file accordingly. About 70% of the time you'll get what you've filed. You're gonna manually enter about 4 or 5 lat/long fixes in your FMC. That takes no time at all.
5 :
FMC's sometimes also have a direct link called ACARS which can be used to transmit new flight plans to the aircraft, as well as get weather, passenger information, etc. It's kind of like email for airplanes.
6 :
the on board flight management computer will normally recognise the route from the captains inputs...and automatically load the required routing...air traffic controllers dotted along the route will advise the pilots to any changes in flight plan as and when required...along with any vectors required to maintain safety clearances with other traffic in the area,on board T'cas (Traffic collision avoidance system)and weather radar also advise pilots of weather and conflicts...the days of biggles are over!...youre upstairs with the professionals and well looked after....just sit back and enjoy youre flight...
7 :
Usually the airlines dispatcher will do the flight plan and the pilot will print it out.

Have you ever been all by yourself on a plane

Have you ever been all by yourself on a plane?
I am obviously talking about like a commercial jet plane, not a private or charter plane. Once I was talking a small NW Airlines/Mesaba plane from Memphis to Greenville, MS and it was only me and one other lady! So, there was a total of 5 people on the plane -- 2 passengers, 2 pilots and a flight attendent. It was really weird.

5 :
Yes I have and it was enjoyable. It was me and 4 other people. No waiting for people to board the plane and figure out how long it'll take them to sit down and shut up LOL. I usually get headaches on planes because of so many people, but that day I didnt.
6 :
I want to hear more about you and this lady on the plane. What was going on with you two?
7 :
There were no passengers on one of my flights long ago, I'm a flight attendant and we had a very long delay, every passenger we had (we weren't full to begin with) were sent to another flight that was supposed to leave an hour after us. When our airplane was fixed, (6 hours later!) we, as crew members just ferried that air plane to Atlanta, a 4 hours flight with nothing to do but eat, watch 2 movies, read a book....
8 :
Sometime back in the 1980's, I was on a UA flight from SFO to LAX on a DC-10 (I think...some sort of twin-aisle widebody.) There were about 20 people on the flight. Kinda cool having an entire section of 10 rows to yourself. Early morning flight, so the flight attendants gave me several servings of pastries. :-)

A few questions about taking a flight with a layover

A few questions about taking a flight with a layover?
Okay, so I'm 17 years old and I have plans to travel alone to Missouri from Boston this summer, which makes me an unaccompanied minor. I've been on planes a few times before, but I've always been with other people who are more experienced with flying and actually know what they're doing in an airport, so I just have a few questions. Also, if this was a nonstop flight, I wouldn't be too concerned because I would be with my parents until I departed from Boston, and then when I arrived, I would be with my friend's parents, but there are no nonstop flights. They all have connecting flights, so I'll either have to stop in Cincinnati or Memphis. I'm most likely flying with Delta both ways and on each connecting flight. I looked up Delta's unaccompanied minor policy, and all I could find was this program that you have to pay 100 bucks for, but they said that it was optional for 15-17 year olds. I'm just curious as to whether they have any other sort of policy for unaccompanied minors who aren't using that program, because I couldn't find anything on that. Also, are there any teenagers out there who have flown alone with connecting flights before, or any parents that have children that have flown alone with connecting flights? I'm just curious as to how it went. To the other kids, was it confusing? Did you get where you wanted to go without having panic attacks in the process? Do you have to check in with anybody when you get to the connecting airport, or do you just walk off the plane and then wait around for however long and then get on your plane? When you get off the plane and enter the connecting airport, are all the gates in the same area in most airports, or do you have to go through hell and back to find the gate for your connecting flight? See, because I'm not really that concerned that I'll be alone, I'm just worried about finding my way through the connecting airport, because I'm not very observant and I'm not very directionally oriented. To the parents, what formalities did you have to go through for your child? Also, when I get to Logan Airport and I'm looking for the gate for my departing flight (say my connecting flight is from Cincinnati) do you look for the one on the board that says "Boston to Cincinnati" or will it be "Boston to Kansas City?" I don't know, that's probably a silly question, but I'm just being cautious. And lastly, are airports generally safe in terms of being an alone minor? I mean, I'm 17, I'm not like, 10, so I think I'll be okay, but I don't want to get mugged or anything.

even though you are 17 you could still use the program of course it will cost you but it migjt help as the airline wiil help you

I have never flown alone, but i have gotten lost in one the biggest airports in the world. Just look on the tv screen that tells you where ur departing and destination. If you act like you know what your doing, then you probably wont get mugged. Or stay close to an adult so if there even is a mugger, (i doubt it) they will think you are with an adult and safe... good luck
3 :
I flew on my own with a connecting flight at the age of 19. It was hell because my first flight got delayed (due to fog), which made me miss my second flight and have to switch over to a later flight (making me have to wait an extra 3 hours). Overall, if you aren't rushed it shouldn't be too hard to find your gate. I flew in to an unfamiliar (and rather large) airport and just looked at the boards to see what gate I needed to be at (plane ticket didn't have it on there, just said something like "to be determined"), went there, and fell asleep until 15 minutes before my flight, haha. It's not too hard, really. Even with all the problems I kept having on debating whether or not to switch over to the later flight, and having a 3 hour wait after the first half hour or more delay it wasn't hard to figure out; especially if you've flown before. The general layout isn't too different, you'll arrive in the terminals as always and will just have to go from one to the other (unless your next flight is using the same gate). I'd also say it's pretty safe in airports...have you seen how anal security is these days? If someone was stupid enough to mug you or something, than I'm sure someone would notice and step in. If not, then hey, just yell as loud as you can, "NO!" and keep yelling it and put up a fight, or hell, if you're in an airport, start yelling, "THEY HAVE A BOMB! THEY HAVE A BOMB!" and I'm sure security will come flying towards you and whoever is giving you trouble will stop immediately! In that case it's easier to ask for forgiveness from the security than get hurt or robbed, but again, unless someone pick-pockets you I doubt you'll have any troubles. Security is all over the place in an airport, they're not exactly a place where you're going to be jumped. And for the question of what to look for on the boards, you'll probably want to know what the airport's name and symbols are. For instance, I went to the San Francisco Airport, so I was looking for SFO. I believe it's called the airport code? Look them up on Google using the name on the airport, if you don't know them or have them listed on your ticket. Or they'll probably list the city. Honestly I can't remember, but know both just in case. If you get confused, just ask someone at one of the gates and show them your ticket; I'm sure they'd be happy to point you in the right direction! Keep your belongings close, make sure you know which gate is yours, don't miss your flights, and have fun =) It's not too bad going alone your first time.

I am certain that you will find this is not very hard. Airports have tons of signs about where things are, so I do not think you will get lost. When you make your reservations, you will reserve a seats on flights with a specific number. Say your itinerary is Delta Flight 3267 from Logan airport to Cincinnati, then Delta 4065 from Cincinnati to Kansas City. If you get your boarding passes at the airport, they will have the gate from which your first plane leaves printed on the boarding pass. You will get a second boarding pass for the second flight, and that may or may not have a gate number printed on it as well. Airports are divided into terminals, concourses and gates. Airlines leave form specific terminals, so you will already have to be in the proper terminal since that is where the check in desk for Delta will be. The gate numbers are designated like A18, or B12, or C6. The letter is the concourse - basically which wing of a terminal you need to look for, and the number is the physical gate number. ALL concourses and gates are well marked. There will be dozens of signs that point to Concourse A, or Concourse C and so on. Once you get to the right concourse, it is just a matter of walking to the right gate. When you get to the gate, the information displayed at the gate will list the flight number, and the destination. The destination is the FIRST place that the plane stops. So, using the itinerary I mentioned above, you would look for a gate with the information about flight 3267 to Cincinnati. It does not matter to you if that plane actually goes somewhere else after you get off in Cincinnati - it certainly does, and the information may say "...with continuing service to Des Moines..." or somewhere - but you won't care about that. Once you land in Cincinnati, then you just look for the gate that is on your second boarding pass. CVG is a relatively small airport, so the gate should be within the same concourse. Just a matter of walking in the right direction until you find it. Now... several things to be aware of: = = = = = = = = = = = Many flights are "code share" flights, meaning that different airlines will sell tickets on the same physical plane, and they will each have their own, different, flight number for that flight. So - when you look for your flight, you might also see "Mumble Airlines, flight 1234 to Cincinnati." If you wait a bit, it will also show your flight number. So don't panic. Gate assignments sometimes change, so even if you get boarding passes with gate numbers printed on them, they may change. So - there are TV screens all over the airport that have departures listed on them. You should <<always>> check those to see if the gate they list is the same as is on your boarding pass. The flights are listed alphabetically by the destination city. Look for flights going to Cincinnati, then find your airline/flight number and check the gate that is shown in the TV. You should also to this when you get to Cincinnati - look at the TV monitors for the flight to KC and confirm the gate number. Airports are really not that hard, usually to find your way around in. IF YOU ARE UNSURE WHERE TO GO - you can always as a ticket agent, or an agent who is at a gate, or other uniformed airport or airline people. Below are links to the Logan airport terminal map, and to the CVG terminal map. Personally, I think that the way the information is presented is poor, but you may be able to print some part of these maps to help you out. Logan airport terminal map: http://www.massport.com/logan-airport/inside-airport/Pages/logan-interactive-maps.html Cincinnati airport: http://www.cvgairport.com/terminals/map.aspx Good luck - have fun and don't worry too much.

Is there a good airline ticket site that lets you search for air fare from your local airport

Is there a good airline ticket site that lets you search for air fare from your local airport?
For instance, if I am only interested in finding good fare from the Memphis airport. It is so disappointing to see these great vacation or flight deals advertised, only to search a little further and find that those fares and/or flights are not even offered at my airport.

what i do is.... go to a cheap airfare ticket site for example.... expedia.com travelocity.com look up for the cheapest flight that u find, write down all the information like flight number and the company like alaska airlines, the departure date and time etc. and dont forget the price too! then go to the airport, go to the plane companys section or their customer service desk and give them the info u wrote down and wala!!!! u purchase the ticket for the price u chosed. just when ur on the websites look for the cheapest ticket.
2 :
Go to Yahoo main page; hit travel; go from there. Then call the cheapest airline and check their rates. The airlines are usually cheaper. Luck to you !!
3 :
Go to a reputable travel agency. Travelocity (Yahoo Travel is their "search engine", Expedia, Orbitz are ALL online Travel Agencies even Priceline. And they do not come the cheapest any longer !!!! What they show is the same that ALL front-stores travel agencies may advertise.

What is the best airline to fly on

What is the best airline to fly on?
I just got back from a trip across the country and I flew Delta. I now realize Delta sucks....BAD. All their employees are RUDE RUDE RUDE!! And someone scheduled a connecting flight where we had only 17 minutes to get to the next gate. Then, they changed that connecting flight without telling us, so when we get to the airport we think we're going to Memphis, and turns out we're going to Minneapolis. So I just want to say, Delta sucks! Next trip I take what airline should I use?

Who booked your flight? Seems that is where the problem originated. I always fly with NWA which is now merging with Delta and I've never had any problems with them.
2 :
Personally I like Ted and American Airlines. Like you I have flown with Delta and I agree, Delta is really bad. Ted amd American Airlines are my two favorite because they have great service and get me to my destination ON TIME. I just got back from South Carolina and United delayed my trip by 6 hours! So I would advise you not to go with United. My recommendation: Ted or AA.
3 :
Well, not all Delta flights are bad. It depends on the route you are taking. The short flights usually have new flight attendants and the long flights usually have old flight attendants (this is the same for every airline. The best bet is to always fly with the airline with the most flights to your destination with the least amount of stops. This usually insures they are well equipped to deal with any delays, can direct you around the airport better and if they happen to be local to where you are flying - even provide ideas for things to do. Best Bets- Delta- If you are going somewhere Non Stop especially Europe American- If you go to Central/South America alot United- Big on Asia and they have CS agreement with many Asia airlines Singapore Airlines- If going to somewhere they fly Virgin America/Atlantic- Even their subsidiaries are excellent. Alaska Airlines- They seem to have a good rapport with their customers Avoid: Southwest UsAir
4 :
Depends where you are flying to and from. My favorite airlines in the US are Southwest Airlines and US Airways. Both are almost always on time, and I have had great experiences with them both.
5 :
Southwest. The planes never crashed once.
6 :
honestly, just find the cheapest one. there are quite a few sites that you can search that will likely give you the best prices available. check out the website BookMe and you will be able to compare prices on all the reputable travel sites in just a couple minutes. it's very convenient and will save you a bunch of time and money. Also, make sure you buy them online... otherwise they charge much higher fees for phone orders. good luck.
7 :
Air Tran is what I find the best. They always have deals, the website is easy to use, and they aren't so strict about unaccompanied minors. American Airlines took out an extra 200 bucks cause I was a minor when airtran lets me fly for normal price. Then the flight attendants were so annoying, they kept talking to me like I was 2. I looked at the fare for Airtran for minors, and even though I am not one, if I was, It would be only $40. Plus American Airlines starves you to death while Airtran gives you food for free. The one time I flew American they made it a big pain in the neck. Airtran is so easy. Oh also Southwest is nice they have good service. And the flight attendants are always really nice, they even sing you a song at the end of your trip. lol
8 :
I would like to personally apologize for the inconvenience that service agent caused you. I know how it is sometimes because i've actually seen it with my own eyes. If only i could clone myself; we would never have any hiccups of this kind. I am a Delta employee and even i get treated bad at times when im flying as a non revenue passenger. The famous saying for most of us goes "it takes seconds to lose a customer but months to gain another". If only all of us had that same mentality we would be problem free. Hopefully this wont be your last time taking Delta, and i also hope your next experience will be an enjoyable one.

Downtown Aviation in Memphis TN?
I have my eyes on Spartan College but ran across Downtown Aviation. I just need some info on it if you have taken courses there. Im real hesitant when it comes to local flight schools. I dont want to fritter my money away to a school that wasnt worth my time and money.

Spartan is a very old and respected name in aviation BUT it will cost you more to get your ratings there than at Downtown Aviation. If you're going to enroll in the degree program at Spartan, that's one thing, but if you're just going for flight training I'd choose DA. I've been to Memphis many times as a corporate pilot and have used their maintenance services. Nice folks to do business with and they really seem to care about their customers. Spartan and similar "pilot mills" are very stressful environments and you won't get treated like a member of the family like you will at DA. I don't think you'll waste your money at DA especially since they have a designated examiner on staff (which is rather unusual for a smaller flight school) plus they have some very experienced pilots on staff, and you can do some tailwheel and aerobatic training which I highly recommend. No matter where you choose to go, you're well-advised to visit and look things over before putting any money down. Personally, I like Memphis. If you happen to like music and a little nightlife it's a great town. Tulsa is OK, but a bit bland for my taste. I'd give DA a closer look. If you're looking for a degree program, take a look at this school. I know a fgew people that have gone there and were very happy with it. http://www.bigbendaviation.com/ It's also quite affordable as aviation colleges go.
2 :
I agree about the pilot mills, visit several schools and instructors and make an informed decision. The best thing to do is pay as you go.. Don't borrow a lot of money and give it all to one place at once. best of luck

Can you use scholarship money for transportation?
I'm apply to Cornell for the Summer Session. I'm also applying for the program's financial aid. They only have partial aid so I'd still be out of a lot of money. I read on the site that you can use other grants, loans and scholarships to attend that school. If I got more than enough to go to the school and had money left over, could I use the extra money for a flight to the school. P.S. I'm in Memphis, TN and the school is in Ithaca, New York.

Best American Airline to work for

Best American Airline to work for?
After I graduate from college I want to go into flight attending. I am planning on moving to Tennessee some time. Mayce Memphis for a while and then eventually Nashville. Which airline do you think is the best airline to work for? I want to make good money and be in a great envoronment!

Alaska Airlines
2 :
I'd go for FedEx. They are right in your neighborhood and they pay quite well.
3 :
The best American Airline to work for is, sadly, a foreign airline. The situation is so dire for airlines that going to work for any of them is a risk. And getting in is quite difficult, with high competition and so on. I would compile a list of the things that are important to you, and talk to recruiters for each of the airlines that service where you want to live. But whatever you do, at all costs avoid United Airlines.
4 :
DoNot, DoNot....become a flight attendant under any circumstances. Stay away from the airline industry entirely. You have a college education...surely your talents and initiative allow you to aim higher than a dead end job such as this. Do you think you would enjoy breathing dirty air 8 hours a day? How about premature aging of your beautiful skin? How about no social / family life because you are away 14+ nights per month. Like working on Christmas, Thanksgiving, your childs birthday, Fourth of July? Do you like sleeping in mediocre hotels or traveling in semi-safe crew vans? Give yourself a BIG break...run away from and forget anything at all about this flight attendant nonsense.
5 :
Alaska Air or Horizon.
6 :
Southwest airlines is the most consistently profitable and has fewer lay offs of anyone. They have a 401K instead of a traditional retirement plan. American Airlines is the only international US airlines to not file bankruptcy. They still have their pension plan intact, unlike most other who have dumped their plans. With American, you can also add a life partner onto your benefits and flight priveleges. If you are single this is nice because you can have someone to travel with you. But if you want to live in Tennesse, try FedEx as someone suggested. Or better yet, the Tennessee Valley Authority.
7 :
Continental Airlines for International travel and if you just want to fly domestic, Southwest Airlines. Last time I checked Fedex didn't have Flight Attendants.

I'm flying from Memphis, TN out to Dallas, TX tomorrow...weather!?
Well all the websites are all giving me different forcasts for the weather. At like 7:00 our plane from Memphis is taking the 1 and a half hour flight to Dallas, TX, where we will then take off again to Tucson, AZ. Anyway, just wondering, if you live in the Dallas area, what do you think the weather will be like? I'm really kinda freaking out, I have a major phobia of planes and don't want a troublesome bumpy flight.

Don't get scared on the plane, it will get bumpy but its just turbulence. it has happened on every plane i go on even in bright sunny skies. P.S. The Dallas airport is really nice and big just try not to get lost because the trolley shuttle things get kind of confusing.

right now it is 79 and cloudy, very windy. Supposed to get a lot of rain overnight and thru the morning. Sorry, but bumps are likely--don't worry, though, they aren't dangerous! Take a Xanax....

You should have booked at least 10 days ago. I am a pilot for US Airways, and the best way to CLT is with us. But it isn't going to be really cheap. Your looking at $389 round trip. With us, you can book a flight online at 15. You can either book tonight, or wait it out tomorrow. Sometimes the fare will be lower the airport, day of the departure. It cant hurt, the fare SHOULD be the same. But, I cant promise that the flight will still have available seats.

I am interested in becoming a flight attendant for Pinnacle Airlines, based here in memphis, tn (where I live). Being a flight attendant is like being a waitress in a tube, except you don't usually get any tips.
2 :
The plane I flew on I asked "Don't you get sick alot?" Because I get sick on planes alot and she was the flight attendent, that is the reason I asked that. She said "No, I work 3 days and then recover for 3 days, so I don't." That means she worked 3 days and took off 3 days. Maybe you could do that. Really depends I guess. Ask your boss. I hope I helped.
3 :
You have some control over your schedule, but it's bid by seniority. That means when you are new you get the stuff nobody else want's usually reserve. That's when you sit at home and they call you when they need you. Hours are varied, usually multiple day trips where some days you fly early, other days late. You stay in hotels when you are out of town. It's a montly schedule, so you can't really say how many days a week you work. Again, it gets better with seniority. Pay is not great, expect the first year to be around 18 grand, and maybe 20 the second year. Yes, many FA's have children. You will have to leave them with family while you are at work. Hope that helps you.
4 :
Whilel i cannot answer all of your qesutions, here is some information that may be helpful to you. Median annual flight attendant salaries were $38,820 in 2000. The middle 50 percent earned between $28,200 and $56,610. The lowest 10 percent earned salaries of less than $18,090, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $83,630. According to data from the Association of Flight Attendants, beginning median flight attendant salaries were about $14,847 a year in 2000. Unlike most 9 to 5 office workers who earn salaries that are privately negotiated and performance-based, flight attendant salaries are paid an hourly union rate that is based almost entirely on seniority. For example, all first year flight attendant salaries at a particular airline might be $19 per hour; all sixth year flight attendants, $32 per hour; and all fourteenth year flight attendants, $41 per hour. Each airline's hourly base rate is unique. Some airlines pay higher hourly rates than others. It all depends on the labor contract. Every 3 to 5 years, each airline negotiates a new labor contract with its flight attendant union. Once compensation is agreed upon, it is fixed for the duration of the contract. Calculating Flight attendant salaries As a flight attendant, you won't be paid this hourly rate for every hour that you work. The time you spend commuting to the airport, sleeping in hotel rooms, standing around the airport between flights, and assisting passengers during boarding and deplaning is essentially unpaid labor. Most airlines only pay you from the time an aircraft pushes back from the gate to the time it arrives at the gate of its destination. This is commonly referred to as flight time, block time, or hard time. The major exception to this is meal expenses. Most airlines pay a nominal hourly rate to cover meal expenses. Hotel lodging is paid for by the airline. Technically, flight attendants are paid based on accrued pay time, which includes block time plus any excess claim time. Claim time is time paid in excess of block time. For example, if you were required to deadhead to another city during a trip, you would not work the flight (and would not earn block time), but would be entitled to additional deadhead time. This additional time would be reflected in your pay time. Instead of flight time-based pay, certain airlines compensate flight attendants based on the number of accrued monthly flight miles. Others pay flat salaries regardless of the hours (or miles) flown. These compensation methods are unique, but you should nevertheless be aware of them. Flight attendant salaries vary for other reasons Job performance has virtually no impact on your pay. You are expected to work at a high level and will never receive a bonus or promotion of any kind, even for exemplary service. This may seem a little strange to you, especially if you have spent a portion of your life in an office building trying to climb the corporate ladder. On the positive side, since pay is tied directly to seniority, you will receive guaranteed annual pay raises; they are built right into the contract. As a new-hire, you might even receive a mandatory pay raise after only 6 months of employment, immediately following the probationary period. Another positive aspect of unionized labor is that it eliminates much of the jealousy and biases that surround compensation in corporate America. For example, you will never hear someone say, "I wonder what they are paying him?, or "I know they are not paying me what I'm worth because I'm a minority." After all, seniority determines pay, which cannot be influenced by human prejudices. On the negative side, however, you are essentially at the mercy of the labor contract and have no negotiating power as an individual when it comes to compensation. If you believe you are underpaid, you cannot exactly walk into your supervisor's office and ask for more money. Instead, you must rely on your union representatives to stand up for you - and every other flight attendant who works for the airline - during contract negotiations. Since you cannot negotiate pay as a flight attendant, be sure to choose an airline that makes the most financial sense before accepting employment. You will want to choose an airline that is in an active hiring mode. This will help you gain seniority more quickly, resulting in better pay. You should also choose an airline with competitive flight attendant salaries. Granted contracts change every 3 to 5 years, but typically frugal airlines stay frugal and more generous ones stay generous. If you want to make the most amount of money, stick to the major airlines. To a certain extent, any flight attendant can simply peruse the labor contract to determine what a fellow employee is earning. After all, if you know someone's date of hire, you can easily determine their hourly rate; it is in the contract! You must realize, however, that although flight hour base rates are fixed, actual monthly income can vary even between flight attendants with comparable seniority. For example, some airlines offer premium flight attendant salaries for those who work the lead or "A" flight attendant position, work at night or on certain weekends and holidays, or fly international flights. Additionally, the number of flight hours a flight attendant chooses to fly in a given month has a dramatic affect on income. Certain airlines have a two-tiered wage system which also affects how much you can earn as a flight attendant.
5 :
Run away from this job, this airline and this industry altogether. It will take years for you to have any small control over your schedule. You will never be home long enough to give your children the TLC which they need. You will age prematurely. You will not get proper rest. You will not be home for holidays and birthdays. Your social life will be almost zero. Surely, you have more talents and ambition than what this miserable position can possibly offer. Run away!
6 :
I have been a flt att for 7 years. Its a great job for a young, single person. I know many flt att's that have kids. It is very difficult for them. Some schedules for commerical flt atts range from 12 days a months to flying only reserve (which can be holidays and during peak travel times) However, reserve typically is given to the most senior flt att's. Corporate flt att's are another story. They fly for companies such as American Express, Coke, Pfizer, mostly Fortune 500 and 100 companies. They have no schedule and the level of service is much more difficult. Serving complete meals (sometimes made from scratch), caviar services, wines services.....all while in the confines of a small galley area. You maybe expected to serve 14 people a 5 course meal in an hour and half. And again, you have NO schedule. You are at the mercy of the flight departments needs. If you work for Flex Jet or Net Jets they will give you a schedule of 6 days on/4 days off. Net Jets offers a schedule of 7 days on / 7 days off. Everyday is a 14 hour day. The salaries for commercial typically start around $17k. It goes up with years of service. The average salary for corporate range between $38-$100+ (if you are lucky!!) The average salary is between $45-$65. The hours are long. The regular work day can between 10-16 hrs. FAA mandates 10 hours of crew rest each night. Commerical carriers on International flights typically state: The length of the flight equals double layover time. IE...10 hour flt...20 hour layover. If you have kids...I would rethink this career. Hope this info helps.

Changing planes in Memphis

Changing planes in Memphis?
I have a flight booked at the end of April with Northwest Airlines from Seattle to Orlando that involves changing planes in Memphis. The scheduled stopover time is 48mins. I figured if NWA is giving me this as an itinerary option then this must be plenty of time to change planes, but when I told a friend of mine about my flight she said that will be cutting it very close. Should I be worried?

No problem in Memphis. The Memphis terminal is "Y" shaped with a cutoff between the two outgoing terminals. Assuming that your flight from Seattle is on time, you have plenty of time. As you de-plane ask the NWA guy standing there with the clipboard which direction your new gate is.
2 :
I've changed planes in Memphis and had 2 hours....well enough time. However I had 48 min to change planes in chicago, which was cutting it tight in general cause it's a big airport....but then our flight took off 30 min late and we had to fly around a storm....we ended up running to catch our next flight.....so in general I think you should be ok, however if their are any delays you don't have much flexability.....
3 :
Nope! 48 minutes is plenty of time to connect in Memphis. The airport is pretty compact unlike ORD, ATL or DFW. I have had connections that were close to 30 minutes and made them easily.
4 :
Memphis is a pretty small airport. 48 minutes gives you more than enough time to get between any two NWA gates. While you are there, you can get some Corky's BBQ to take on your connecting flight. That's about the only good thing in MEM.

I recommend that you contact a travel agent. They can give you the best details for your situation.
3 :
Go to the page below and use the "Flight Tools" Start with "Direct Flight Destination Finder" Alternatively use "Orbitz" to work it out for you (if you see what I mean).
4 :
on certain days Northwest has a flight that they claim is direct from Little Rock to Washington Dulles. I have a feeling that it may stop somewhere but you will not have to change planes.
5 :
the only nonstop flight is offered by Southwest Airlines Texas ( Code WN ). Their daily flight " WN 631 " departs from Baltimore to Little Rock at 2.15pm and arrives at Little Rock at 3.40pm You can check flights under : http://www.southwest.com/ have a nice day K.

Southwest Airlines is the only airline that offers non-stop service. Northwest Airlines does offer a DIRECT flight which means it will stop to fill gas, and continue on to the destination. This may take a while depending on which aircraft the airline is using. Southwest Airlines does have a "Open Seating" policy which means that you can sit wherever you prefer when your boarding zone is called (A,B,C). I, myself, do not like this policy. I'd rather have an assigned seat to rest my head.
